One way vs round trip taxi: which one saves you more money?
How intercity taxi pricing works
Two pricing models exist for intercity taxis in Tamil Nadu: one-way (drop taxi) and round trip. The per-km rate is different for each, and choosing wrong can cost you thousands of rupees.
Here is how each model calculates your fare.
One-way (drop taxi) pricing
You pay for the distance from pickup to drop. The driver returns empty, so the per-km rate is higher to cover that dead leg.
Typical sedan rate: Rs 14/km Minimum distance: 130 km Driver batta (allowance): Rs 400
Example: Chennai to Madurai (462 km)
- Distance charge: 462 x Rs 14 = Rs 6,468
- Driver batta: Rs 400
- Total: Rs 6,868
Round trip pricing
You pay a lower per-km rate, but the distance is calculated as twice the route distance. There is also a minimum km per day and a per-day driver batta.
Typical sedan rate: Rs 12/km Minimum distance: 250 km/day Driver batta: Rs 400/day
Example: Chennai to Madurai and back (462 km x 2 = 924 km, 2 days)
- Distance charge: 924 x Rs 12 = Rs 11,088
- Driver batta: 2 x Rs 400 = Rs 800
- Total: Rs 11,888
Side-by-side comparison
| Route | One way | Round trip | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai to Madurai (462 km) | Rs 6,868 | Rs 11,888 | Rs 5,020 with one way |
| Chennai to Bangalore (350 km) | Rs 5,300 | Rs 8,800 | Rs 3,500 with one way |
| Chennai to Pondicherry (150 km) | Rs 2,500 | Rs 3,800 | Rs 1,300 with one way |
| Coimbatore to Ooty and back same day (180 km round) | Rs 2,920 (two one-ways) | Rs 3,400 | Rs 480 with round trip |
When one-way wins
One-way is cheaper whenever you are traveling point-to-point and not returning the same day. This covers most use cases:
- Flying into Chennai, taking a taxi to your hometown
- Dropping family at the airport or railway station
- Moving between two cities for work
- Weekend trips where you’ll return by bus or train
The savings increase with distance. On a 400+ km trip, a one-way taxi saves Rs 4,000-5,000 compared to round trip.
When round trip wins
Round trip makes sense in three scenarios:
Same-day return on short routes. If you’re going from Coimbatore to Ooty (90 km) and coming back the same evening, round trip costs less than booking two separate one-way taxis. The break-even point is roughly 150 km one way; below that distance on a same-day return, round trip often wins.
Multi-stop day trips. Visiting three temples around Madurai in a day? You need the car to wait. Round trip pricing includes waiting time; one-way does not.
Extended stays with the car. If you need a car and driver for 2-3 days at your destination (sightseeing, wedding events), round trip is the only option. One-way drivers return immediately after drop.
The math shortcut
Multiply your one-way distance by the one-way rate. Then multiply the same distance by 2, times the round trip rate, plus extra batta. If the one-way total is less than half the round trip total, book one-way.
For most trips over 130 km where you do not need the car at the destination, one-way saves money. The farther you go, the bigger the gap.
Toll and permit costs
Both models charge tolls separately, at actuals. Interstate permits (for routes crossing into Karnataka, Kerala, or Andhra Pradesh) add Rs 200-500 depending on the state. These costs are the same regardless of which pricing model you pick, so they do not affect the comparison.
